I am writing this to you while drinking a good ol’ cup of coffee – (no pun intended). This morning I went to a fictional coffee shop and lived my fantasy of finally being a Gilmore Girl.
For those of you who have been living under a rock, October 5th marked the 16th anniversary of the Gimore Girls premiere. Netflix had over 200 pop-up shops of the infamous and iconic Luke’s Diner sprawled across the US and Canada. Being the avid Gilmore Girl fan and a pop culture connoisseur that I am, it was only my duty to go to Toronto’s pop-up and tell you all about my experience.
Each store was open from 7am-12pm. I meet my friend at 8:30am that morning thinking we would have loads of time and there wouldn’t be a line up. Oh was I wrong. I shouldn’t have underestimated the power of Gilmore Girls. The line was already around the corner. After waiting two hours, yes two hours, I finally entered the coffee shop and got my cup of coffee. (I’m actually quite terrified of caffeine so I purchased a hot chocolate). The man who served my hot chocolate actually looked quite a lot like Luke, plaid shirt and all. But the real man who played Luke in the series, Scott Patterson surprised some fans at a pop-up in LA. If only I lived in sunny California!
Each coffee cup has a coffee sleeve with Luke’s diner logo and ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ printed on the back. Each cup also has a quote related directly about coffee stated in the show. I thought it was just a plain white cup and threw mine away. Only after I get home checking social media did I realize these cups had Gilmore Girl quotes on them! The servers wore their Luke’s diner aprons, and their baseball caps turned backwards with the Netflix logo on it. I thought they would play Gilmore Girls theme song or some other tunes that were featured throughout the show but sadly it was just the Top 40. Adele would have to do.
Netflix released a featurette of the highly anticipated Gilmore Girls revival. It gives you a behind the scenes look of the cast on the show and show the best moments from the series. A Stars Hollow website is also now live and it is brilliant. Kirk actually lost the password in 2007 but has since found it and the site is now up and running again. It even includes a visitors guide, directory, local artists, and town updates.
November 25th cannot come fast enough!
