Blogging: Why I Decided To Start A Blog

August 5, 2016 3 Comments

“oh, you have a blog…”

I envy bloggers; they write about whatever they want, whenever they want with no guidelines, rules or limitations. They’re their own boss. I have so many opinions on certain subjects and trends that I want to talk about but I’m afraid to put on my Facebook timeline, or it can’t be contained in 180 characters on Twitter.

I’ve attempted pretty amateur blogs during high school and college. None successful and none I was passionate about. I’m worried of starting a blog and people saying “oh, you have a blog…”. Everyone and their mothers have a blog. I feel starting a blog is an excuse for girls to post pictures of themselves or talk about makeup. These girls aren’t educated in the slightest to give anyone advice on what foundations work for different skin types.

Countless articles about starting a blog/YouTube channel say the #1 rule on all of these articles is KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE/BRAND. This is the rule that has makes me hesitant. I don’t know who the hell my audience is or what the hell my brand is. Sure, I can drive my posts towards female millennials, but I don’t even think majority of millennials can relate to me. My interests are sitting at home and binge-watching Three’s Company for crying out loud.

When I moved to LA I just started writing. I write about my experience, write about my job search, write about wanting to write a blog. I now realize I don’t need to follow these rules if I want to write. If I want to write, I’ll write whenever I damn well please about whatever I want. If someone out there in the world gets something out of my posts then that’s all I want. Whether is be a 19 year old girl trying to make it in the television industry, or a 63 year old man who finds my obsession with older celebrities intriguing.

So yes, I’m starting a blog and yes, this is my new baby. I’m proud of my experience and want to share it and neither should anyone else. Yes thousands of people start blogs in hopes of being successful, but everyone is doing everything nowadays so why can’t we? I hope whoever you are reading this can either support me or maybe get the confidence to start your own blog too (ps, if you do let’s collab!).

Hello. I followed a link to your blog through a certain young man on FB. I am married to his moms cousin.
I look forward to reading about sunshine, stars and life in LA while I shiver away in the dreich Highland summer.
(You have also given me a boot up the arse to get writing again too.)

I’m so happy to hear that social media is working! Thank you so much for taking the time to follow and read my posts. You should definitely start writing again, something very therapeutic about it. Ps- would love to know who the young man on Facebook is

It was Jake. (I am married to Stefanie’s cousin.) I last saw him when he was two and would sing along with Barney the dinosaur. It scares the pants off me to realise how much time has passed.
I dusted off the keyboard and got writing again today. Thanks for the inspiration and kick up the arse!
